Lasem, Rembang — Members of the PKK women’s group from Jiworejo Village, Jiken District, Blora Regency, visited Rumah Merah Heritage Lasem to learn about hand-drawn Lasem batik. During their visit, participants explored batik collections and learned how the cloth is made using traditional techniques.
The visit offered a closer look at the work behind each piece, from its patterns and colours to the stages of production. Participants took an active interest in the educational session and joined discussions about the distinctive features of Lasem batik.
Understanding How Hand-Drawn Batik Is Made
The session introduced participants to drawing patterns, applying wax with a canting tool, dyeing the fabric, and removing the wax in a process known as pelorodan.
Learning about these stages helped participants understand the skill and attention to detail involved in making hand-drawn batik. It also gave them a clearer picture of the work that takes place before the fabric is ready to wear.
Viewing the batik collections added to the experience. Participants could examine the patterns and colours while learning about the characteristics of Lasem batik.
Sharing Questions and Discovering Batik Together
The discussion gave the Jiworejo PKK group an opportunity to explore Lasem’s batik patterns and characteristics in more detail. It connected the visit with something familiar in everyday life: wearing batik, even without knowing every step involved in making it.
For the group, travelling from Blora to Lasem was a chance to learn together outside their regular activities. The visit provided knowledge they could take home and share with their families and village community.
